Are we going to see the return of scrapers in the UK?

With the recent announcement of contracts being awarded for the mammoth HS2 Project there is already a lot of speculation about the possible use of motor scrapers once more on these shores.

There can be no denying that if the ground conditions are right the motor scraper is the ultimate earthmoving machine, able to load, haul and spread the load itself on a vast majority of job sites. In the glory days of motorway construction in the UK the motor scraper was king and now it would appear that these earthmoving giants are being considered once more as opposed to the more recently favoured ADT and excavator combo.

Of course there are still some contractors using motor scrapers in the UK today, but not in the numbers that were seen in the 60’s and 70’s. For the earthmoving enthusiast there really is no finer sight than a busy fleet of motor scrapers in full flow and I for one am looking forward to their return in numbers.
