Komatsu’s Big Boy Dozer in Action
We all love to see a bit of big dozer action here on the Digger Man Blog and in Europe, they don’t come any bigger than the Komatsu D475A-8 that my Earthmovers Magazine colleague, David Wylie caught on camera earlier this year in Fife.
As featured in the July edition of Earthmovers, this machine has been put to work at the Patersons Burrowine Moor Quarry in the Kingdom of Fife. Tipping the scales at 118-tonnes this latest version of Komatsu’s D475A is powered by a 30.4-litre Komatsu diesel engine which puts out an impressive 1040hp.
Fitted with a single shank ripper which can dig down to a depth 1845mm, and heavily reinforced 27.2cu.m capacity semi-U blade, this machine really is a beast.

Our resident Scottish and global heavy earthmoving machinery correspondent David Wylie said, “The Dash 8 version of the D475A is no mere upgrade of its predecessor, as the new model is physically larger, the machine sits on a redesigned main frame, which is said to be dramatically stiffer and more durable, with a planned service life of 60,000 hours.”
David’s video is now featured on the Earthmovers Magazine You Tube channel, along with many more videos from my fellow contributors, and I’m expecting many more to be added going forward. So, if machine videos are your thing please subscribe to the channel, enjoy the action!
