New Cat 13-Tonne Excavator Looks a Class Act

During Conexpo 2020 in Las Vegas, this year's only overseas trip, I was delighted to see the latest version of Caterpillar’s 13-tonne class 313 GC.

New Cat 13-Tonne Excavator Looks a Class Act

It was during a visit to the Caterpillar Demonstration and Learning Centre in Malaga in 2015 that I first got to try out the original 313F GC model. The simple design and 55kw engine that did not require any AdBlue to achieve the necessary EU emissions regulations, made the machine appealing to those running hire fleets and to owner operators who could see the economical benefits it could offer. The model appears to have sold well over the past 5 years, but now its time for the all-new Next Generation 313 GC to shine.

Normally by now we would have been able to gain some stick time on the new model to find out how it shapes up, but thanks to the ongoing Covid-19 scenario that’s not been an option, however, we are still determined to find a way into the seat of one very soon!

The new 13,800kg 313 GC is powered by Cat’s 4-cylinder C3.6 diesel engine which is EU Stage V emission standards compliant and offers a power output rating of 74hp (55.4kw) while according to Cat, offering up to 10% greater fuel economy than the previous model.

Cat have also added a new Smart Mode of operation, which automatically matches the engine and hydraulic power to the working conditions. For those who like to be even more frugal, the ECO mode is available for those less power demanding jobs.

As we have seen on the larger Next Generation models, a new main control valve is fitted which eliminates the need for traditional pilot line controls. These controls are effortless and will appeal to fans of light control joysticks.

This model also benefits from a larger cab than the previous model. It features what Cat describes as a low-profile design but with large front, rear and side windows for improved visibility. The use of narrower pillars means it now offers 40% greater visibility than the old F Series machines. The standard fitment of rear and right-hand-side cameras adds to the overall safety in terms of vision around the machine.

Its probably fair comment to say that the monitor control scree on the old model was pretty basic, the new 313 GC receives a larger 10-inch LCD version with touchscreen ability for easy navigation and features intuitive controls integrated into it.

Technology such as onboard software, standard Cat Payload, standard Cat Product Link via VisionLink, new Remote Flash and standard Cat Grade with 2D (upgradable to Grade with Advanced 2D or Grade with 3D) boost efficiency and performance while reducing downtime.

The machine was put through its paces daily on the Cat Operator Challenge Arena during Conexpo which is where I caught some footage it in action.

Max. reach at ground level, ft/in (mm): 28’ 4” (8 660)

Max. loading height, ft/in (mm): 21’ 0” (6 420)

I think you will agree, the new 313 GC is a smart looking excavator, a vast improvement over the old model in terms of styling and options, and is sure to sell well.
