Old JCB 6 Discovered at Rest

Roving contractor Chris Griffin, of Kent Based Griffin Groundworks, has been on the road again and come across another old classic gem to share with us here on the Digger Man Blog.

Old JCB 6 Discovered at Rest
Chris has once again been in touch via our Instagram account to tell us about this old machine that he came across in Wisbech, near Peterborough last week. A definitive identification has not been possible but we suspect it’s either a JCB 6, 6C or 6D. The owner suggested that this machine had the later tracks on it and that it was possibly built in 1981. I think that is incorrect of course, as by 1973 the new 800 range of excavators had been introduced starting with the 806 and 807 models. The JCB 6 was first introduced as far back as 1966 and was upgraded to the JCB 6C and 6D models in 1971, the machines were virtually identical but the 6D featured a wider and heavier undercarriage offering improved stability. I am more inclined to think this machine is one of those later models. These machines were powered by a Perkins 6.354 six-cylinder engine capable of pushing out 106hp @2,250rpm with earlier models being powered by a Ford power unit. Considering its age this old girl doesn’t look in too bad a condition and could make a great restoration project for someone with the time and money to put to it. Checkout this classic promotional film from JCB which shows a 6C in action, with traditional commentary from those days.
We thank Chris for sharing these shots with us here on the Digger Man Blog.
