RayGo Giant Resurrected: #FlashbackFriday
We have featured the RayGo Giant here on the Digger Man Blog on numerous occasions before, but when footage of another one of these rare machines comes along, it would be rude not to share it!
Only seven production models of these monster twin engine motor graders were ever built so its pretty incredible that there are still at least five surviving at various location across North America, including California, South Carolina, South Dakota, and North Dakota.
The machine featured in the video is believed to be the last one ever built and sports the serial number 7. Back in the day the machine was owned by Saskatchewan, Canada based Paul Morsky Construction Ltd.
The machine is still sporting that company’s logo, and it still resides in that area in a giant construction machinery boneyard which I’m sure would be an awesome place to visit one day!
Tipping the scales at 53-tonnes these unique earth levelling monsters were powered by 2 x GM 8V71 producing 318hp, one at the rear and one at the front, so a combined power output of 636hp.
Manufacturer RayGo Inc was more well known for producing compaction equipment, but saw a gap in the market for a super grader to maintain haul roads in the big mines, which led to them producing the first RayGo Giant in 1969.
The machine in the video from Vantagetes Channel on You Tube, had not been started for 15 years, but they got her going and performed a little grade off on the soil. One can only imagine the fuel bill for running one of these monsters, possibly another reason why they were not that successful.
