SEM Cat Inspired Machinery for the Chinese Market

The Shandong Engineering Machinery Co Ltd (SEM) is another Chinese brand that has been manufacturing construction machinery for over 60 years.

I have seen Shandong equipment at many trade shows over the years, especially at Bauma, the machines have always had a strong resemblance to Caterpillar models, and I just concluded they were just another Chinese brand copying other manufacturers designs, but in my blissful ignorance was unaware of the connection between them and the American based construction machinery giant.

Having done some research it transpires that in 2008 SEM became a wholly-owned subsidiary of Caterpillar. Then in 2014 the SEM company transitioned to become Caterpillar (Qingzhou) Ltd and now continues to produce machines under the SEM banner with a strong focus on the Chinese domestic market and other less regulated territories.

The SEM range of products includes wheeled loaders, motor graders, soil compactors and most notably track type tractors (dozers).
