Undercarriage Tips for Life
This video from Caterpillar is often highlighted to me by our resident Mr Rule Book on the Digger Man Blog, Kenneth Hatcher, who its fair to say is pretty obsessional about working machines in the correct manner as specified in the operator’s manual. I figured it was about time we shared the video here on the blog.
This Caterpillar video is actually over 11 years old, but everything that is mentioned in the clip is still very applicable to the modern excavators we see today.
Excavator undercarriages have not really changed all that much over the years, despite all the advances in technology that we have seen in the upper workings of these machines, but by following the tips and tricks explained in this video you can drastically lower undercarriage wear, extending the life of the track components, and ultimately saving yourself or your boss, a whole heap of money, which can only be a good thing!
Of course, in an ideal world one would always work in the specified manner with sprockets to the rear, but in some instances its not always possible or practical, and some of the wild characters I have worked with in the past would soon have you chased off site for constantly shuffling around to make sure the idlers are at the front, but with a little thought and planning ahead it can be done!
The Digger Man Blog would like to thank Kenneth Hatcher for once again highlighting this video.
