Historical Liebherr Brochures (Part Two) #ThrowbackThursday

As promised previously, here is part two of the historical Liebherr brochure post, featuring scanned brochures from the private collection of our German friend and contributor Dirk Bömer.

Historical Liebherr Brochures (Part Two) #ThrowbackThursday

One of the most iconic Liebherr machines from my perspective was the R 921 Series C, they had a certain class about them, well-engineered throughout, and very Germanic in styling. My personal memories of these stem back to a time when Oldham based Queghan Construction were working close to my parent’s home in Southampton, a job that I used to visit on a regular basis as a youngster.

While most of their excavators were from Priestman, they did take delivery of a new R 921 on this site, I recall it was operated by an Irish fella called Willy Jordon, who was non to pleased when I jumped up in the cab for a spin, and I was quickly told to get out, after a hail of expletives!

There was something about these machines when they were working, I think mainly due to the drone of the air cooled Deutz engine purring away as they did, that sound has stuck with me to this day.

This brochure depicts the earlier B-Series R 941LC, interesting to see it was marketed as low noise back in those days.

As mentioned in the first post on these brochures, in the early 1980’s Liebherr launched its “2” Series generation machines with white cabs, which somewhat strangely started with the R 942.

This machine competed in the 40-tonne class and I remember one of these being owned by Southampton based plant hire and earthmoving contractor MJ Passingham, I recall stopping by on my bike to watch the machine at work on the Bitterne bypass, oh how I wish I had taken more photographs in those days!

We round off this batch of brochure scans with the popular 20-22-tonne class Liebherr R 922, I wonder how many of these machines are still working around the globe, quite a few I would imagine, such is the durability and strength of the Liebherr product.

While researching I came across this video of an R 922 working in Greece in 2016, I have no doubt that this machine will still be putting in a good shift to this day!

Once again, we thank Dirk for sharing his material with us here on the Digger Man Blog.
