Rare Underground Cat ADT Comes to Light

Roving American plant and machinery enthusiast Anthony Lucibello certainly has an eye for finding unusual items of kit both classic and new, he has kindly shared some photos of a rare Caterpillar underground ADT for us to enjoy.

Rare Underground Cat ADT Comes to Light
Specially designed low-profile underground kit is rarely seen by most of us as by its very nature, it spends most of its working life down in the mines out of sight. Unless we are lucky enough to see it at shows or during transport to its job location we would probably never see them, so its nice when these things appear. Anthony discovered this Caterpillar example, which we have not been able to identify, after it came out of a mine in the Florida area. There is every possibility that this machine could have been built in the old DJB factory in the North East of England at Peterlee. Caterpillar acquired the DJB design rights in 1986 and subsequently took over ownership of the company. Over the years the company’s own research & development department have made numerous conversion models. This example appears to feature the old style DJB skip, while the cab looks more Caterpillar influenced, which suggests that this machine could have been built during the transition period maybe? Of course, DJB themselves also developed many variants of the underground product over the years including this low profile D300 model. Caterpillar are still producing dedicated underground machines to this day and in this promotional video we can see the current AD22, Cat's smallest underground ADT model.
We thank Anthony for sharing these photos with us here on the Digger Man Blog.
