UK construction output increases
The Office for National Statistics has revealed that the UK’s construction output increased 0.6% in July to September. This was in contrast to the year’s second quarter, which saw output decrease 1.2% from April to June.
Q3’s stronger performance was down to the 1.4% increase in new work. Most sectors enjoyed an increase in construction output from July to September, with private housing up 1.8%, private commercial work up 1.5%, and private industrial construction up 7.2%. Although these figures were offset by the 0.8% decrease in repair and maintenance. In that area, the fall in Q3 was driven by a 3.0% decline in private housing and a decline of 0.3% in non-housing.
Construction output decreased by 0.2% in the month-on-month across all work series in September 2019. This was driven by a fall of 2.1% in repair and maintenance, which was partially offset by a rise in new work of 0.7%.
